What do I need for a photo tour in Finland and in general?
The simple answer is to simply use what you already have and make the most of whatever that is. If you’re wondering what I carry in my bag on a photo tour, keep reading.
Nikon D850 w/ 3 lenses (14-24mm, 24-70mm, 70-200)
GoPro Hero Black 7
iPhone 12 Pro Max
DJI Mavic Air 2
Other equipment
Tripod
Shutter release remote
Gimbal
Extra batteries
Chargers
Dry bag and/or rain cover (depending on destination and activities)
Power bank
Head torch
I use my phone probably as much as I use the camera. It’s especially helpful if you want to share on social media or with family without having to spend so much time editing. The GoPro is great for recording video, and it also takes decent photos.
Do you need all those things?
It really depends on you and why you are taking part in this type of travel experience. So, I would not suggest that people buy new equipment for the trip, unless you really believe you need it and will use it again after the trip.
If you don’t own a DSLR/Mirrorless camera, you may want to check your local camera store to see if renting equipment is an option. Not only does it save you money, but it also gives you a chance to decide whether it’s something you want to invest in.
Tripods...
For many photo tours, a tripod is especially necessary if you want to capture the aurora or take long exposure shots of things like waterfalls. I often take a full-sized tripod, but I do recommend investing in a travel tripod. Make sure that it will be sturdy enough for your camera. I also carry a smaller tripod which is for my phone.
Head torches..
A head torch is essential while chasing the aurora because it will be quite dark, and you will want to see while walking or even while setting up your camera. I try to have my settings ready before going out, but I have had an occasion where I ran out without being able to put in my settings beforehand.
About batteries...
Before you go out to shoot, you want to make sure your batteries are fully charged and that you have extras. Batteries tend to drain faster in the cold, and it will be cold in destinations like Finland and Greenland. To keep your batteries from getting cold, it’s a good idea to keep them close to your body where they can stay warm. Regarding batteries for a GoPro, I personally found that 3rd party batteries retain their charge more than GoPro batteries.
Gimbals...
Gimbals help stabilize your camera or other device while recording videos. The one I own is a Hohem for an action camera with an attachment for the phone. That way you can record on both at the same time.
To drone or not to drone?
Drones allow you to get shots and videos you cannot get without one, showing you unique perspectives. I am personally new to drone photography, so I will not suggest anyone take a drone. What I will say is that you need to know the laws and regulations for drones wherever you intend to fly, especially when abroad. Some destinations have more strict laws than others. Some locations may require special permission, so it is always wise to ask before you pack your drone.
