Meeting Sisters in Ilulissat

It was Saturday, August 20th. Checkout at the hotel was at 10AM, and my flight to Nuuk wasn’t until after 6PM. My new friends had traveled to Nuuk also, but the day before which meant they weren't there to help me pass the time. So, I put my baggage in the hotel storage room, and I went out. Obviously, I couldn’t just sit there in the lobby for hours on end. I wouldn’t.

I walked out the door and decided I’d head toward the Yellow Trail which I could reach easily from there. I knew I had no intentions to hike the entire trail though I thought of it. Hey, I had plenty of time.

I made it up that long flight of stairs. “Maybe I can fly my drone,” I thought. But then, nah, I didn’t really feel like it. While I stood there, two ladies walked up the stairs. I heard them talking, and said, “Ah, Americans.” I noticed they looked alike. So, when they got closer, I asked if they were sisters.

We started talking, and I found out they were for the same tour that I would be on the following week. It was great meeting other women who shared my interest in photography. They also like adventure which was refreshing to see. We talked more, and I ended up going to lunch with them.

We ate at a restaurant called Inuit Café which doesn't seem to be at all related to anything Inuit, but it has a reputation for being the best or one of the best restaurants in town. You often need to reserve a table ahead of time which the friends I met before and I had tried before. It didn't work out. And that's another story for another day.

But still, that’s one of the beauties of travel, meeting people you may not meet otherwise. Imagine that! I met two American ladies in Greenland that I probably would not have met in the US. Our shared interests led us to meet in another country by chance.

After lunch, we headed in different directions. I had made use of my extra time with them and headed back to the hotel. It was still early, so I stopped in front of Zion Church to stare out at the water and ice.

I will never tire of this scenery. It's kind of my happy place, a place I go to relax ever since my first trip in 2018. My guess is I'm not the only one who feels this way.

After I had spent a little time there, I made the trek back to the hotel and waited.
