What is it like to go on a reindeer safari?
Personally, I found it to be a lovely experience. Slowly making your way through a winter wonderland is quite relaxing, especially if you've been doing more strenuous activities that day or even the day before. That's one of the reasons I chose it even though there are opportunities to do other activities which I talk about in this same post.
After two days on a private photo tour, I knew I needed a lighter activity even though no matter the activity, I would still be taking photos. I booked a reindeer sleigh ride experience which included feeding reindeer as well as lunch.
Our guide met us near the cafe at Lammintupa aka Winter Village, and he explained how everything would go before leading us to our sleighs. There were only 4 of us on this particular trip, me as well as a lady with her 2 daughters. I actually enjoyed that because we were able to talk and ask questions with ease because we didn't have to fight crowds or shout over each other.
Side note: Lammintupa is in Ruka and quite near Magical Pond where you can stay in a glass igloo which I highly recommend even if it's only for one night.
After the sleigh ride, we practiced with lassoing and fed the reindeer. They love moss which is in abundance there. It was an interesting feeling having these adorable animals nibbling from the palm of our hands, or should I say gloves? Either way, I enjoyed it. It was better than my first experience in Norway a few years ago.
What can you do if you're not interested in reindeer sleigh ride?
Well, there are several options at winter village to choose from. For example, you can choose the husky safari which offers you the option to be the musher as well as simply enjoy the ride while someone else does the mushing. There's also the option to do a snowmobile safari, and ice carting. They also have a children's park if you are looking for activities for younger children. Ski trails are also nearby which means you simply can't go wrong with a visit to Winter Village.
What can you do after you finish with your activities?
As mentioned, there's a cafe on-site where you can have lunch or warm up with a hot drink. It's near the entrance which allows you to enjoy the scenery from the windows. All in all, it's a great way to spend the day while in the area.
