Arriving
This was my first trip to Nuuk, and since I had extra time in Greenland, I decided to stay for 8 days. I arrived in the evening close to sunset, so I wasn't able to fully appreciate anything just yet. Earlier in the day I had hiked and walked a little in Ilulissat, so that's how I was dressed.
In another post I mentioned my new friends going to Nuuk a day earlier. We stayed in contact, and they booked a table at a restaurant so we could have dinner together before they traveled back to Iceland the next day. My flight had been delayed slightly, so I was running late and didn't have time to change. I checked into my accommodation, left my bags and headed to the restaurant which was inside of HHE. Once I found them, I sat down and we started talking.
I still can't get over how comfortable I was with them though we had only met two days ago. I guess that doesn't really matter. I was really happy to have met them and spend a little more time with them. It was also nice because I was in Nuuk for the first time. It can take a minute to get comfortable sometimes. So meeting them was a big help.
Taxis
After dinner, I got a taxi back to my accommodation which was a guesthouse, fancy hostel? I don't know. That is a topic for a separate post. In any case, my taxi ride was over 200 DKK which is roughly 26 USD. I expected the first bill to be high because I had asked the driver to wait for me while I was checking in, and then he also took me to the restaurant. Either way, I knew that spending this kind of money one way was not going to work. But it would take me a couple days to do something about it.
Note to anyone thinking of visiting Nuuk...
Pay attention to where your accommodation will be. I was late booking, so I didn't have many options and ended up in a newer area of Nuuk which is on the outskirts called Qinngorput. Supposedly it was only 1.3 miles from the center, but it certainly seemed farther than that. I would definitely recommend booking as early as possible and looking for places in the center of town. The extra cost is worth it because you will pay extra in some form if you are far away.
First Full Day in Nuuk
On my first official day in Nuuk, I didn't do anything except go to a supermarket which wasn't that far I guess, but I wasn't completely sure, so I called a taxi. That was another issue, my terrible pronunciation. I could not say the name of the apartments correctly and finally someone nearby suggested I mention the name of a landmark which was easier for me to pronounce. I mispronounced the supermarket name also. I was absolutely NOT winning that day. The supermarket it turns out, was in walking distance, so I walked back instead of calling a taxi. The walk was downhill which means I would have been climbing uphill had I tried to walk. Eventually I was okay with that walk, but not on this day.
As I was walking back, I saw a man with his grandchild sitting on his shoulders. I asked if I could take a picture, and he said yes. I'll share that picture in a post about the people I met or encountered in Nuuk.
I didn't go anywhere for the rest of the day, and I didn't go anywhere the next day. It was raining for most of the day, so I took the time to work on some content and rest which I definitely needed.
